What Do Mormons Believe? — Rex E. Lee — Two Copies: First Edition & Reprint (which corrected a little controversy)
$20.00
What Do Mormons Believe? by Rex E. Lee is a short, accessible introduction to the beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Written for a general audience, the book explains core doctrines such as faith in Jesus Christ, modern revelation, additional scripture like the Book of Mormon, and the Church’s emphasis on priesthood authority and ordinances. Lee’s tone is clear and measured, aiming to build understanding rather than argue or debate.
A lesser-known aspect of the book’s history is a small controversy surrounding its first edition, particularly in how it described women and priesthood authority. In that edition, Lee used language suggesting that women, though not ordained to the priesthood, “share in” or participate in priesthood authority through their service and callings. Some readers felt this phrasing was too ambiguous, as it could be interpreted to mean that women hold priesthood authority in the same sense as ordained men, rather than participating under priesthood direction.
Because priesthood authority is a central and carefully defined concept in Latter-day Saint theology, even subtle wording differences can matter. In later editions of the book, the language was clarified and refined to more precisely distinguish between priesthood ordination and the important roles women fulfill within the Church.
These books are in good to very good used condition.
