Gibson was a Mormon who conned Brigham Young and was then expelled. He went on to make money in California’s Gold Rush and then on to Hawaii where he served as premier of Hawaii under King Kalakaua for 5 years. He was later in Sumatra in the East Indies and ultimately did time in prison for treason against the Dutch.
