Where events in the Book of Mormon actually occurred has not been easy to determine. Early Saints believed that North America was the “land northward,” that South America was the “land southward,” and that Panama was the “narrow neck” that connected them. But as time passed geographers and archaeologists saw that events must have occurred in a smaller area. Many theories have emerged, but three in particular: 1. Mesoamerican setting, 2. South American setting, 3 North American setting. It is the purpose of this Journal to be open-minded regarding all theories and allow science and facts that come to light, to be considered. Our main goal is to “examine all theories of Book of Mormon geography.” This first volume includes the following: An Introductory History of Book of Mormon Geography, Bret A. Eborn, the Heartland Theory Interview with Rod Meldrum – Nick Galieti, The Truth About Peru, by George Potter, Shades of the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot) in the Book of Mormon and in Mesoamerica, by Diane Wirth, Notes on the Book of Mormon’s Old World Setting, Warren Aston, Book Review of John L. Sorenson’s Mormon Codex, by Roy Schmidt, Book Review of John L. Sorenson’s Mormon Codex, by Trevor Holyoak, Honey Bees in America? by Rush Utah, The Land of Zarahemla (1906) by Joel Ricks, Chamber of Records at the Hill Cumorah, by Stephen L. Schwendiman, God’s Drumlin: The Hill Cumorah in the Religious Geography of Mormonims, by Klaus Gurgel, Buoyed by Faith: The Jaredite Migration, by William Harold DeVaney.

He is the author of The Comprehensive Bibliography of Mormon Literature and Bret Eborn’s Guide to Mormon Books. More recently he wrote Flaxen Cords, which is a ground-breaking new theory on how secret combinations may have been passed anciently. His article nicely lays out all the current theories of Book of Mormon geography.
  • Eborn’s article uniquely pictures many of the books published over the years, including Just One Cumorah by Riley L. Dixon; The Geography of the Book of Mormon by E. Cecil McGavin and Willard Bean; An Ancient American Setting for the Book of Mormon and Mormon’s Map by John L. Sorenson; Joseph Allen’s Exploring the Lands of the Book of Mormon; A Challenge to the Critics by Diane Wirth; Archaeology and the Book of Mormon by Milton R. Hunter; In Search of Cumorah by David A. Palmer; Las Ruinas de Tiwanaku y el Libro de Mormon by Hans Ralf Caspary; Book of Mormon Guide Book by Verla Birrell; Lehi Never Saw Mesoamerica by Del DowDell; Christ in North America by Delbert W. Curtis; Cumorah-Where? by Thomas Stuart Ferguson. It also cites other books such as An Introduction to the Study of the Book of Mormon by J. M. • Rod Meldrum is the author of several books and is one of the main advocates for what has more recently been called the “Heartland Theory.”
  • Stephen Schwendiman – “Chamber of Records at the Hill Cumorah — Mormon Deposited the Records in the Hill Cumorah.” Stephen is the author of four comprehensive books of history on Mendon, New York, and the many Saints who converted in that small town, including Brigham Young and Heber C. He has authored many books including Lehi in the Wilderness, Nephi in the Promised Land and Amazing Discoveries, Voyages of the Book of Mormon. He gives a very convincing argument for placing Book of Mormon events in the Andean region of Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador.
  • Diane Wirth has a fascinating article: “Shades of the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot) in the Book of Mormon and in Mesoamerica.” She is also the author of Decoding Ancient America and Weaving Golden Threads.
