Printed by J. Sadler; Liverpool, 1851. 8p. 5 1/4 x 8 1/4; bibliographic reference, Crawley 585, Flake 4943; Disbound; Rare! James Linforth defends Joseph Smith’s Character.
Lawrence was a native of Liverpool, was the perpetual curate of St. Luke’s Church there. His wife Lucia Young and he had 5 children. Linforth was a man of exceptional gifts, assistant editor of the Millennial Star and book agent for the Liverpool Conference in 1851. He converted to Mormonism in 1842 and in 1850 published an article in the Millennial Star called Baptismal Regeneration or the Controversy in the Church of England.
With artist Frederick Hawkins Percy, he produced the beautiful book ROUTE FROM LIVERPOOL in 1855. He went to Utah in 1856 with his wife and kids, and then later to San Francisco. He died 30 years later.
The Frederick G. Williams Catalog had one of these at fifteen thousand dollars in 2008! (A printed copy of that listing is included in this clam shell box).
This one is in very good condition and is housed in a unique clam shell box! This is not an anti-Mormon booklet, but a refutation of anti-Mormon claims.
