1899 — Missionary Song Book — Southern States Mission

Published by the Southern States Mission in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1899, the Missionary Song Book for Use of Elders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Missionary Field was compiled as a practical hymnbook for Latter-day Saint missionaries serving throughout the American South. This compact 232-page volume contains 188 hymns and gospel songs selected for missionary meetings, preaching services, and devotional gatherings, drawing from traditional LDS hymnody as well as popular religious songs of the period. Issued during an important era of missionary expansion, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the daily worship and spiritual life of nineteenth-century LDS missionaries. Original copies are becoming increasingly difficult to locate and are highly desirable to collectors of Mormon history, early Church music, and Southern States Mission publications.

Condition: Fair only. Original front soft cover present but almost completely detached; the back cover is missing. The volume is incomplete, ending on page 222 with only a portion of hymn no. 186, with the remaining leaves absent. Tucked inside the book are two loose, heavily damaged leaves that appear to have originated from the missing portion at the back of the volume. Despite these defects, much of the text block remains intact and serviceable, making this a suitable reference copy or an affordable example of a scarce nineteenth-century Latter-day Saint missionary hymnbook. Even incomplete copies of this Southern States Mission publication are seldom encountered, and the book remains an important artifact of early LDS missionary history and music.
