Reprint of the 1857 “Proclamation by the Governor” — Brigham Young — [About the invading Johnston’s Army]

This is a reprint (single sheet on a parchment-type paper) of the 1857 Proclamation by Brigham Young.

The proclamation is issued due to the coming of Johnston’s army to the Utah Territory.

This document by the Governor declares martial law, forbids troops from entering the territory, and states that all the forces in said territory hold themselves in readiness to march, at a moment’s notice, to repel any and all such threatened invasion.

The so-called Utah War was more of a non-war actually, but it remains the largest peace-time army ever assembled by the United States sent to a territory that was not in rebellion at all! A unique document; single sheet, reprint.
