The Church of Christ (Temple Lot) and The Voice of Warning
After the death of Joseph Smith in 1844, several groups claimed to continue the original Church of Christ. One such body, the Church of Christ (Temple Lot), gathered in Independence, Missouri, emphasizing that the city was the divinely appointed center of Zion and seeking to preserve what they viewed as the earliest doctrines and structure of the church.
Among its leaders were R. E. Stone, L. M. Thornton, and J. H. Camp, who served on a Board of Publication. They helped produce The Voice of Warning, a periodical used to defend the church’s claims, teach doctrine, and respond to competing Restoration groups.
The publication reflects a time when printed tracts and newspapers were central to religious debate, and it remains an important window into the beliefs and identity of this Independence-based Church of Christ tradition.
