Framed Photograph — Emil John Raddatz (1857–1933) — Framed Print with Nice Frame & Glass Front

Emil John Raddatz (1857–1933), a prominent Utah mining entrepreneur, businessman, and politician. Born in Stettin, Pomerania, Raddatz came to Utah after years of mining experience in the American West and Mexico and became one of the leading figures in the development of the Tintic mining district. In 1907 he organized the Tintic Standard Mining Company, serving as its president and general manager, and was instrumental in developing the company’s operations and the town of Dividend, Utah. He was also involved in Utah politics and business and became a well-known figure in the state’s mining industry. The framed portrait is a large formal black-and-white photographic portrait of Raddatz, mounted under glass in a substantial period wood-grain frame with a wide tan mat. The photograph bears the imprint “Lignell & Gill, Salt Lake” at lower right, identifying the prominent Salt Lake City photographic studio. Raddatz is shown in a formal suit and tie, wearing spectacles and a mustache, in the dignified style of an early twentieth-century professional portrait. The photograph and period framing make this an appealing piece of Utah mining and Salt Lake City history.
